Which SUNY Are You?
Hello, my name is Iran Vanterpool and I am the assistant director of the Silly Welcome Center now who are we as the Suni Welcome Center as the Sony Welcome Center. We serve as the main hub for Suni for all students and families in the entire New York City area. We service students and families within the five boroughs as well as additional counties such as Nassau and Suffolk counties within Long Island, Westchester County and also neighboring counties in northern New Jersey are Golden purpose at the Welcome Center is to.
Introduce Sunita students of families and allow them to learn more about our systems as well as our programs that we offer with the hopes that the student would want to apply to some of our campuses and hopefully enrolling one of our campuses in the fall. So there's a few things I'm going to make mention before we start this presentation.
So first after the completion of the web and are a slide deck will be made available. Close captioning can be enabled by clicking the close caption button at the top right corner of the share window. Full screen viewing can be enabled by clicking the expand button at the top right corner of the share window. Should you need to re sync audio and or video, please refresh your share window.
So the title of this presentation is, which soon you argue, which is very fitting because as you discover, learn more about soony, the whole purpose is for you to figure out where more about our campuses and see which campus might be a match for you, which in turn you figure out which soon is for you.
So why Soony and why not soony now soon as an acronym for the State University of New York, where the largest comprehensive system of universities, colleges and community colleges in the entire United States. And that's why because we have such a large system, we had 64 campuses.
Along with having 64 campuses, we have over 415 thousand students.
We have over 3 million alumni haven't such a large network of alumni allows the opportunities for people from various campuses to be able to network as well as even current students should be able to connect with someone who is an alumni which can be a great connection from them later on. We also have famous people that have graduated from our soony such as Wolf Blitzer, the famous journalist, an anchor for CNN who attended University at Buffalo. We also have acted chance to Turow if you might remember her from the Spike Lee movies.
Or maybe within your generation Watt Transformers. He is a graduate of Suni Purchase and there's also designers Calvin Klein and Michael Kors who are graduates of Fashion Institute of Technology, also known as FIT.
That Sony is very important about that. Our students are focused.
And that's why we offer 4393 undergraduate programs. So we offer a variety of programs in different areas such as humanities, public services, Health Sciences, engineering, technology. So whatever you're interested in, we have something for everyone.
We have outstanding faculty and we don't say that just because our faculty are the foremost experts in the particular fields that you're learning. So no matter what degree program you're in, you're being taught by somebody that offers a lot of years of experience in that field. It most likely is currently working in that field, even if he was being told by somebody who was retired. You'll being taught by somebody that is giving you decades of experience which is going to help you as you learn more about the degree program, your end, and hopefully be able to go on to graduate and go into that profession.
We also have 40 honest programs. All of our four year campuses have honest programs in addition to some of our community colleges.
We have over 23,000 course sections available online, so why we have traditional students who are scholars like yourself who was graduate high school and go directly to college that will take online courses. For various reasons. We also serve other populations such as a nontraditional adult learner population, which allows them to have that flexibility. So overall, our online courses allows us to have the flexibility so no matter what's going on in their life, they are able to take courses and be able to find a way to make it flexible for their schedule.
We also offer 59 transfer paths at Suni. We provide suni students within our system the opportunity to be able to transfer with ease from one campus to another. So whether it's from a Community College to a four year school or from 1 four year school to another school, we also have transfer path agreements with outside public colleges within New York State out of state as well as private colleges in state and out of state.
So applying learning in the real world.
So as soon as we feel it's very important that students have the opportunity as much as possible to apply what they're learning within a degree program. That's why most of our.
Campus is often internships and coop programs.
Here we have three stores that take advantage of those opportunities. On the top left meet Mark, who was a journalism and communications major. He had the opportunity to intern with a Pulitzer Prize winning photographer to your right. You have Kelsey. You see her Delta beautiful red pandas. Now Kelsey is about was biological scientist Major, but she also was interested in zoology. So she took the opportunity to Internet to Utica Zoo where she learned about everything that's required to become a zookeeper. Then to your bottom left you have shame is.
So shame is was an aerospace engineering major and had the opportunity to intern at NASA and SpaceX, which is pretty cool.
So we also offer study abroad programs as soon as we have over 1000 study abroad programs. Students have the opportunity to choose a program that there may be excited about that. They've always may have a passive wanted to visit. So for instance, let's say a student wants to visit Paris, right? But maybe their school doesn't offer it, but that's OK. The great thing about soon is that as long as the student is within the Suni system, they can apply to any campuses. Study abroad program. So you're not confined to just.
The study abroad programs are your campus. At this there's a place that you've always wanted to visit. You can take a look at other campuses and see which one offers that program and apply to that program.
So meet Bridget, who's in computer science major only on to Bridget always wanted to visit Paris and had the opportunity to do so. So even though only on to didn't offer the program, she did her research to find out Stony Brook off of the program. So she joined that program and had the opportunity to stay seven weeks in Paris where she had the opportunity to learn about the French culture. Also take courses and was able to receive 9 credits applied towards a major. And as you can see she took full advantage of all the sites in the beauty of carrots.
So also another opportunity for students to apply learning in the real world is do undergraduate research at Suni. Suni has spent nearly one billion dollars in undergraduate research, which provides students the opportunity to be able to work with professionals that had the opportunity to do hands on work and have the opportunity to learn more within their field so that by the time they move on to their actual profession, they're going to have a wealth of experience and knowledge that's going to help them and go help him go along way.
Meet last meals and integrated neuroscience major. Lashley had the opportunity to work with a team of doctors who was looking for a cure for Parkinson's disease.
Service learning for credit. So as soon as we want to, we want students to be able to find their passion and once doing is find that passion. Our goal is to help that student will be able to start navigating and put him on that path to be able to develop those opportunities to learn to get their hands on experience that work in real life situations so that they will be prepared when they move on to go into the actual profession.
Meet Derek was a public health major. Now Derek is all it was always passionate about being in the health field and helping people. And he had the opportunity to work at his schools clinic, which is actually student ran and because he was in public health major, this was the perfect fit. Foot Derek. So he got to work at the clinic while also receiving credit as well.
That soon and we understand their point of being value conscious. You may have heard the term. You'll get more bang for your Buck, so we want to make sure. So we definitely believe that it's too much to definitely get the most out of what they pay for their education. We are nationally recognized for our many programs that we offer an some programs that are very well renowned and very popular nationally and internationally.
We are also known for smaller cost of attendance.
Our graduation rates are higher than the national average.
And typically, students that attend our soony campuses usually leave with a lower amount of lower amount of student debt.
So next, we're gonna learn a little bit more about soon in the campuses.
So remember that I told you that Sony has 64 campuses, 14 out of those 64 campuses are University centers and doctoral degree granting institutions. 13 of the 64 campuses are University colleges.
Seven of the 64 campuses are technology schools and 30 of the 64 campuses are community colleges. As you can see, the community colleges make up almost 50% of the schools within our system.
So for us we can start with University centers. Now typically University centers have the largest population of undergraduate students versus the other sectors. Now you may have a program that has its lowest 1000 students, but we have campuses that have as high as over 20,000 students and on average you'll probably see that most of the campuses in University centers will have similar between 15 to 17,000 undergraduate on campus.
There's always plenty of opportunities for research for cell phone. The moment you actually come into one of our University senses when you enroll, your going to have plenty of opportunities to do research throughout your undergraduate years and also your graduate years as well. If you choose to move on to a Graduate School.
We offer degree programs from batches degree always to the doctoral level and Masters in between, so there's plenty of opportunities to receive degrees for some of our professional schools and most of our professional schools might have a school that's unique to them when there might be a few that have a similar type of professional school.
Anna University sentence competing. NCAA Division One athletics.
Here is a chart of a breakdown of the 2019-2020 academic year. So for the freshman that enrolled in the fall of 2019, students who were accepted met certain requirements. As you see here. On this chart, you see there's a range for the GPA. Arrange for the essay T and the range for the AC T scores, and those in the parentheses for each column you see middle 50%. So what that means is 50% of the freshman whom enrolled met the requirements that you see on the chart. They fell somewhere in that range and were admitted.
So you may say to yourself what happened to the other 50%. So some of those students may have been high. Achieving a scored higher than the maximum numbers that you see there, but then some may have been just outside. Maybe there was just outside the GPA range, but they had strong test scores. Or maybe they were within the GPA range, but maybe the test scores were out just outside just a little bit below but not too far, but they were still admissable. And then there's those group of students who are admitted into an opportunity program like the Education Opportunity program for instance, which I'll talk about later on in this presentation.
So first we can start with the University centers and doctoral degree granting institutions.
And friends will stop with what we nicknamed. The Big Four, nicknamed the Big Four because these four universities are the most popular of all of our soony campuses. But they also received the most applications every year as well. So typically you're talking about anywhere between 25,000 to maybe 40,000 applications per year at these campuses. So we gonna start in Western New York, where we have the University at. Buffalo was founded by President Millard Fillmore, who is in New York State representative the University of Buffalo offers a number of great programs.
And professional schools, such as their law school, which is well known, not just within New York State, but nationally as well, and they are also one of the two schools that offers a school for pharmacy.
And then we can move to Central to central New York where we have Binghamton University, which has a distinction being known as a public Ivy. They are highly respected when it comes to just who they are as an institution in their programs. They are also the most competitive of the University sensors, so pretty much every year.
Anytime I get about 40,000 or more applications an out of that pool, there's only a small percentage of students that are going to be accepted. So no matter what program is doing applies to all the probabilities, program is going to be competitive, and there's only going to be a certain amount of seats now. Being attended offers a number of great schools, such as their school for the Harper School for Arts and Sciences, which is the oldest of their schools, and there also the other school besides University of Buffalo that offers a school for pharmacy. And then we're going to move East to the state capital, Albany.
You'll find the University of Albany now the University of Albany officer number terrific programs, but I want to highlight their criminal justice program, which is very well known not just nationally but internationally. You can receive a bachelors degree in criminal justice. You could either Masters degree, but they also have a PhD program in criminal justice and their PhD program is so well renowned at universities and colleges, not just the United States, but internationally used to Albany model to structure their PhD criminal justice programs.
And then we got moved South to Stony Brook University, which is about 50 to 55 minutes outside in New York City and located in Long Island. Now, Stony Brook is the only University center that can both happen in Medical Center on their campus. They also offer a number of great progress in areas such as nursing and engineering.
Next we have two private schools and you might be looking at the screen saying to yourself, not wait a second isn't cornella Ivy League school and it is private. So Mr why you even discussing a private school. So here's why for now. On Alpha University, yes, are both private institutions, but they have partnerships with Sony and through certain programs students can actually apply and there will be applying a bit enrolling into a program that is connected with Souni an because any progress are connected with souni, students typically are not going to pay the private school sticker price.
They won't pay the suni price either, but they'll pay somewhere in between, so it's this will still be less than what another student who might roll into four program for the private school would have to pay. Now, Cornell offers three different schools for undergraduate and one for Graduate School. The exclusive veterinary medicine is a Graduate School, so a student will need to major something in the area like Animal Science, zoology or chemistry biology. Some program before they can actually apply and get accepted to Cornell Veterinarian School.
But for undergraduate, there's a school for agricultural Life Sciences, the School for Human Ecology, and the School for Industrial Labor Relations. Now all three of these schools have various degree programs within them, so when you do your research, you can take a look at what degree programs are often at each school, and then we have Alpha University. Alpha University offers a number of great ceramics programs and they offer ceramic, art, ceramics, engineering and also 1:30 ceramic engineers in this country are actually graduates of Alpha University.
And then next we have two University sensors that have special missions. You have the school for Environmental Science Forestry which is known as ESF. ESF offers a number of great progress in the areas of business and technology in the Sciences that revolve around environmental science as what the school specializes in. What's also actually pretty cool about ESF is that they only with 25,000 acres of land in the add are on deck's region, so they also have a campus in that region as well, so students can actually spend the semester to add are on deck.
At the opportunity to apply their learning there as well, but also be one with nature and have the opportunity to explore the outer endex. Also what's great about he accept is that they all.
Power Ranger School. If you ever instant becoming a Ranger or Forest, Ranger and ESF would be the right school for you and then we have Sony Polytechnic Institute, also known as soon as Poly. Now Sony Poly has two campuses that men campuses in Utica, which offers was that houses most of their degree programs. However, if you are looking to major in nanoscale engineering, nanoscale technology that you would be at their Albany Canvas.
And then next we have three medical schools within our University center sector. We have upstate Medical University and downstate Health Science University. Now you may be asking yourself so what's the difference between the two? The obvious is their location. So upstate medical is located in Syracuse, NY and Downstate is located in New York City and Brooklyn in the East Flatbush section. Now, even though the difference between them is that distance, what they have similar or the programs they offer. Both of these schools offer programs in the areas of health.
Science is so a student can major something in nursing or radiation therapy or occupational therapy. Physical therapy. There's also opportunities to do a pre Med track if you want to go on to be a medical doctor and ESF ESF. Excuse me upstate and downstate. Often MD programs. Now the thing about upstate and downstate is that their upper division schools and So what does that mean? So because they're up in the upper division, schools are student, can enroll starting their junior year, their third year.
Now, prior to that, a student will need to attend another soony so they could attend a Community College received their associates and then go onto a upstate or downstate. Or they can attend a four year campus, receive 60 credits, and then transfer on to upstate and downstate Health Science Center and they have what's known as articulation agreements. And you'll hit this term quite often throughout the college process. So articulation agreements is when 2 colleges and universities come together on an agreement where one school is going to offer the lower level credits.
Or the lower level degree and the other schools going to offer the upper level credits for the upper level degree.
And then we have the College of Optometry, the College of Optometry is a Graduate School and it's also located in New York City on 42nd Street, right across the street from Bryant Park. This is also where the Suni Welcome Center is house. Now we're not part of the College of Optometry, but this is where you'll find out officers.
Next week I'm going to the University colleges so University colleges when it comes to undergraduate population typically is smaller than the University centers. You can have anywhere from 3400 students to over 9000 students.
University colleges you'll find a small cities and towns and you may notice that certain schools play a very important role in the town, such as you know, the number of people they employ that work in the town. Also, businesses connected with the school and they may even own some campuses or even its own. Some apartment complexes off campus as well.
Now University College is similar to University centers, offer bachelors degrees and Masters degrees, but that's where the similarity ends. 'cause as you saw earlier, if you want to pursue a doctoral degree, you will need to apply to one of our University centers.
When it comes to athletics, the University colleges compete in NCAA Division three athletics.
So similar to the China showed you with the University senses. Here's the breakdown of the students who were at who enrolled in fall of 2019. The ones who the middle 50% of the people who met the requirements to see on the chart and member I told you about the other 50% of the students their own different categories as to. But we're still admitted into these campuses.
The first thing I start in Western New York and we can start was soon in Fordonia. Now suddenly Fredonia is the school that's located the furthest West out of all the Sudanese. Fordonia offers a number of great programs in areas such as education as well as visual performing arts, and also because we're done dislocated then not too far from the Pennsylvania border, and also not too far from Ohio. And then you go about 45 minutes to an hour North and you'll find the city of Buffalo where you'll find Buffalo State, which is located in the heart of downtown Buffalo. Now, Buffalo State offers a number of great programs.
And also unique program of forensic chemistry.
And then we have sunny Brockport which is located about 20 minutes North of the City of Rochester. Now Brockport offers a number of great programs in areas such as physical education, sports management and they also have a great dance program and then South about 30 minutes from the City of Rochester you have Sony Genocchio which offers a number of great progress in areas such as psychology and chemistry and also offer popular school systems such as a school for business in the School for Education. But another thing to know about Jenna SEO is that they're one of the two most competitive schools in this sector.
And I'll tell you about the other school in a couple of slides. So because Genesio is competitive when you're applying them at what program you're applying to, there's going to be a certain amount of seats. So a number of great number of great students are going to apply, but not everybody is going to necessarily get in, and the reason why I'm highlighting the city Rochester when I talk about these schools as because of certain cases, you're going to have campuses that are located in towns where you only means of transportation is likely a bus, or if you have a car. But then if you are the campus as act as.
In a city or nearest city, then you have access to more options for travel, such as not having an airport nearby as well as an Amtrak train station.
And then next week I'm moved in the northern part of New York State, and we're going to start with Oswego, which is located right in the North and central part of New York State. And by the shore of Lake Ontario, Oswego offers a number of fantastic programs such as the Zoology program is the only sooner that offers a bachelors degree in this area. They also have this journalism and broadcast communications degree, which is also very popular and most famous online such as Al Roker and Steve Leavy from ESPN. And then you have Potsdam.
And Plattsburgh now both of these schools are located in what's known as the North Country and called the North County. As you can tell on the map, they're pretty far up North, but also it's an area that's more predominantly rural. So that's the area. If you was driving around in that territory, you're going to find a lot of farmland. You'll find a lot of things that just totally different from what you see from the rest of New York State. Now, Potsdam offers a number of great programs, including including their music program, which is the most popular, very popular with Insooni.
As offered within the Crane School of Music, and Plattsburgh offers a number of great program such as psychology, business and also nursing, which is a very competitive program but very excellent program. Now schools like Potsdamer Platz, Burgundy could tell where they're located. You might see you could tell that they're not too far from Canada, right? So the nearest major cities to these. Both of these schools are Montreal, which is an hour North of Plattsburgh, an Ottawa, which is an hour and 20 minutes North of Potsdam. And then we'll move over to Saratoga Springs, NY where you're going to find Suni Empire.
Now those Sony Empires main locations in Saratoga Springs. They also have 35 locations throughout New York State. They may ask yourself now why is that so empire is very unique in that they serve the traditional student population and non traditional student population and they have a number of students out taking online program but also because they have a concentration of students in various parts in New York State there's a counter within that area for them to contact. If they have any immediate questions or even save students applying, they can actually reach out to that particular counselor.
And then next we got moved to the central part of New York State, where you will find Suni Cortland, which is one of the more popular University colleges. Now Portland has the distinction of being able to boast of winning the most championships in athletics out of all the sounis, they also offer number great progress in areas such as sports management as well as education, and then would actually wanna move over to soon in Oneonta, which is also another one to popular University colleges, Oneonta offers a number of great programs in areas such as audio recording engineering. If you're someone that's looking to be in a music producer when working.
Music industry on the answer would be a great school that offers a program for you. They also have an articulation agreement with FITA 3 + 1 program for Fashion Design so a student would attend only on two and do their first three years of fashion design. Do there found you FT where they receive their bachelors at Fashion design? Buffalo State also has a similar program with FIT and then we're going to move South to Duchess County where we would find New Paltz. Now Sony new policy, the other competitive school besides Genocea so New Paltz.
Office number great progress in areas such as astronomy and unique program such as communication disorders. Also, if you're a student is looking to go away but don't want to be too far. Maybe your maximum number is 2 hours. New pulses are great option because new pulse is about an hour and a half to two hours outside in New York City. Depending on what borough you resign.
And then we got most after Westchester County. So Westchester County is where you'll find purchase college located in Harrison, NY. Now purchase cars offers a number of great progress in areas such as business psychology, but they are very well known for their performing and visual arts programs, and both famous alums such as Mr Blade himself, Wesley Snipes and then we're going to move out to Long Island about 35 miles outside in New York City is where you'll find Suni Old Westbury, Sony. Old Westbury offers a number of great programs in areas such as business and marketing as well psychology and related support services.
They also have articulation agreements with the Downstate Health Science Center, but nursing and physician assistant, which are both 2 + 2 programs.
Then next week and move over to the technology school. Now out of all the four year schools, this sector is where you'll find campuses. They usually have the lowest amount of undergraduate students on campus. You can have as low as 1600 students and only one school don't have as high as 10,000. But most of these campuses are going to have usually 5000 or less when it comes to toast.
Population of undergraduates. Now one of the big selling points for technology schools in the hands on education. If you're someone that likes that likes your learning that prefers a learning where you're not only just being spoken to, but you're able to touch field, you're able to work on something. Then the tech school might be the right fit figure.
Test goes offer degrees out all the Ward levels they offer, certificate programs they offer, associate degrees, bachelors degrees as far as Masters degrees, maritime Bell, Hire more Israel out of textbooks that offer those degrees.
Technology schools similar to University colleges also compete in NCAA Division three athletics.
And here's a breakdown of students who were admitted in the fall 2019 for the Bachelor group. Progress with text group and the only reason why you see in bachelors degree and not all degree programs because they put the associate degrees usually requirement is different when enrolling. So usually students that are accepted into a Bachelor degree degree program usually has a GPA that's like 80 or above versus associate degrees where student might be admitted in their GPA is around 75.
So for us we gotta start.
In upstate New York, where we'll find Sunee Canton, which is the Premier technology school in the North Country, so Canton offers a number of great progress in areas of Health Sciences, engineering, technology. But one highlighter very unique program to have it, which is known as Funeral services Administration. He may be saying to yourself, wow? Funeral services. Yes Funeral services Canton is the only school one the only few schools in Italian knighted states that offers a bachelors degree in Mortuary science management. And then the only Suning that offers a bachelors degree.
In Mortuary science management, and then we'll go South to Alpha State College, which is located in Alpha, New York. Not to be confused by Alfred University, sometimes they get confused now, after state is a tech school, but Alpha State Office number great programs in areas such as Health Sciences, engineering and technology and also offers great program such as culinary. What's also great about Alpha stated that they have a partnership with our University where students can actually take course in Alpha University for free. It won't cost anything. Extra intuition you can actually take a course or two.
And have that within your semester and it's not going to count for anything additional.
And they're also pretty popular for their football team.
And then next we have three. Sony Tech schools are located in central part of New York State. Similar all of them specialize in areas of agriculture and they also have various degree programs in areas of hospitality. But there also a very unique they'll High Officer program and sports turf management. They often associate degree and a Bachelor degree for that program, and they also have an 18 hole golf course on their campus. And then you have Morrisville, now Morrisville, if you're interested in working with horses, maybe won't become the question they have their Queen science program.
For those students who want to be able to work with horses and then you have COBOL skill now Coma Scale offers a degree program in canine training. It's very unique and is the only program often insooni, but also is the only degree program offered. The entire United States. So no matter where student resides in the United States, if they were looking for a canine training program, global skills are only school that they can apply to.
The next week I moved South to Maritime College, which is located in the thighs next section in the Bronx. Maritime offers a number of great programs in the areas of engineering and technology and have unique programs such as naval architecture was also pretty cool by maritime is that they only ship that they utilized for a recruitment event. So let's say for instance, there's a recruitment event in Virginia faculty and staff there probably takes to his investors along with them, and they'll sell down to Virginia and participate in the event. There's also students who also work in the Caribbean this summer.
And so a maritime will actually put those things on the ship and they will take them down to the Caribbean and they also participate in participate in Fleet Week. And this is also the alma mater of Geraldo Rivera.
And then we'll move on to log out about 40 miles outside of New York City you have Farmingdale State College now similar to the other tech schools. Farmingdale office degree programs and Engineering Technology Health Sciences. But what's unique about Farmingdale is that if you're looking to go into area of aviation, whether you want to become a pilot working air traffic controller or any other area of aviation.
Farmingdale would be the school for you.
Next, we have community colleges. So now remember I told you that we have 30 community colleges and our community colleges when it comes to student population, they can have as low as 600 students but they will have some campuses that have over 13,000 students.
Now community colleges offer certificates, programs as well as associate degrees.
And they also offer housing on campus now out of the 30 campuses 20. Three of our community colleges offer on campus housing, another seven that's left half of those schools offer off campus housing. And then you have some that are just commuted schools. So that's strictly for students that live within a 30 mile radius that can be able to commute from home and go to the campus.
Now community colleges compete in JC AA Divisions 1, two and three in athletics.
Open enrollment or community colleges have always been known for open enrollment. However, not every campus has open enrollment. So depending on the program that you're applying to, there may be a deadline of that. Campus has a deadline. That means there's only a certain amount of seat, and once those seats are filled, that program is going to close. So I strongly urge any of your scholars that will apply to community colleges. Depending on the program you apply to our inquire and find out if there's a deadline for school tells you that there is a deadline that you know there's only a certain amount of seats.
You need to make sure you get all your documents and everything in time so you can get the admin into that program.
Now our community colleges you find all over New York State and I think about our community colleges that wherever there's a Community College, it's highly likely that within the same town, or maybe within the next 10 or a few minutes away, there's a. There's a four year school nearby. Here. We're going to highlight FIT, so you may have heard earlier. May remember earlier I mentioned the FIT. You can receive a bachelors degree. However, it is a mandatory requirement that at FIT all students complete an associates degree before they continue on for a bachelors degree.
So it's mandatory. There's no way to circumnavigate or get around that every student has to start off with that ending up and associates degree. Then it could continue on with a bachelors degree.
The next we have the educational opportunity program which is known as EOP, now the educational Opportunity program provides students the opportunity to be able to be accepted or be admitted into a particular campus where they may not have met the regular admission requirements. However, there was still strong enough. Next turn GPA requirements but also financial requirements to be admitted to the program and what the educational opportunity it provides. Students was supporting the system to better be successful and they will receive that support for the whole entire time there at that campus.
So if you had a four year campus, a student has actually five years versus 4 to complete their bachelors degree. If you're in a Community College, you have three years versus 2 years to complete your sources degree, and you can transfer your EP. You can transfer from one LP to program to another LP program you know once you complete your degree from this point, go for associates to back to four year campus.
Now here's the financial requirements for IOPS. Remember, I told you that the academic desota academically the student just GPA needs fall within a certain range and they value at each sector. So yeah, the Community colleges GPA requirements are going to be different from the tech school versus different funding. University colleges versus the University sensors. And then there's the financial peace. So after students, the academic requirements and their academically eligible, then comes the financial part of the process. So campuses are going to take a look at.
The documents that are receiving a parental Guardian when it comes to tax information and then go take a look at the total annual income versus the number of people the household. So let's say you are part of a household of four right cuz yourself so in the household of four, the amount can go past 47,638. It has to be at or below in order to be able to be financially eligible. In the event that the annual income goes over that you're not going to be considered eligible for EOP. However, there is a possibility to still be admitted as a regular admit, depending on.
Where you fall academically or in some cases a student may have to start at a Community College, then transfer at some point to a four year school.
So there's three steps for the ELP program, so you have to complete the form which you complete after you submit your application, there's going to be a link. That way you're going to click on the LP form button and fill out that form. There's also. You also can upload a Mail your documents. In the past, students can only just Mail documents, but now this academic year we've introduced the opportunities for students to be able to upload documents which will help speed the process. Then there's also completed the essay. Now depending on which campus you're applying for.
GOP program central. Some of them will require all three steps to complete before your admin. Instead, ELP program. Some may actually admitted student, but once they admitted they still have to complete that essay, usually before they get to the campus in the summer. And then there might be certain campuses that may not necessarily quality the essay, so it's important to find out that campuses you replying to what it is. So what will they require for the essay? And then also I just mentioned the summer program, so I forgot to mention.
But the price slide that one of the components for the ELP program is that it is a mandatory requirement that you stay at their campus for four weeks during the summer. Is non negotiable that for some reason you don't attend and you're not, then you're going to be this.
And the program is as a very important part of the ELP process and part of the program.
So that's going to talk about the six steps to enroll first is doing your research. I highly recommend that you do your research with the campus is if you don't know then definitely there's different ways. There's definitely ways to be able to start doing the research. You don't want to store names on the school or just because your friend has a list of schools going to put all the same schools on that list. It may be possible that your friend might meet the requirements for some schools and which you may not so you want to find the schools that are the right fit for you right, which is hence why this presentation is called which soon are you.
Also the application open and typically they are open after August 1st. You have one or two options. You can use their soony application or the common application so it all depends which ones you want to use. Because if let's say for instance you want to apply to just soon as you only want to consider Suni schools then you can use the Sony application. But if you're looking to apply to not just soony but also public colleges in state or non state as well as private colleges and stated knighted states that you're going to want to use the common application.
Now.
Within our Sony application 50, three of the 64 campuses are on that application. 29 of the 64 campuses on the common application, so this will include also the crowd out the cause of ceramics of Alfred State as well as the colleges within Cornell and then not community colleges offer individual applications as well, so some community colleges are not. It's only application. They offer their own application which we will need to complete.
Now some tips don't know when you're applying. Submit the application that works best for you. Like I just mentioned, the Sooney app or the common app utilized the application worksheet. I highly recommend this because if you use the worksheet is going to help you when you do the live application and the application worksheet are the same exact questions you're going to see on the Live Suning application. So what you complete an answer on the worksheet you can be able to transfer that to the live application. Start your essays early is very important. At some point junior junior year you scholars have likely ran the essay or two.
And by this point you should have an essay that you feel that you want to submit an. I would highly recommend having your English teacher look at it. Had your college Advisor Council look at it as well so you can have a clean and polished and revised essay that you can submit and we highly recommend applying by December 1st or definitely for the month of December is out. And that's because we want to do is to be able to maximize those opportunities that once they received acceptance letters they can do a little bit more exploration, find a little bit more about the camp, is about the area, do a virtual tour.
And maybe you can find out what Scott says. They're offered, but also being able to be eligible for scholarships early because the later of student waits. There might be there might be the number of scholarships may lessen.
Then after I told the first you can apply for financial aid there free application for federal Student a also known as faster.
Now here's a breakdown of the tuition for a Bachelor degree programs, but not just tuition, but also our annual cost. So in your left column you see the New York State Live in New York State resident living on campus. That would be yourself. The middles for the commuter student and on the right hand column is for students who are from out of state that enrolling our campuses. Now. If you add everything up. Usually when it comes to the Bachelor degree programs or are four year schools, your annual costs are probably somewhere about 23 to 25,000.
Also take note of transportation.
I always spent in the transportation becausw depending on where you was campus you go to is also depend on how much gonna be looking at for transportation. You may not pay over $1000. Maybe Payless because maybe the only options are bus. Now if you own the vehicle then obviously looking more like at paying for gas, right? But you might be paying more because there might be certain times where you may need to get home faster for a certain reason such as. So there's always the opportunity to take a plane or take an Amtrak back for the second bus.
And here's the breakdown for our cost for the two year colleges for associate degree programs. Now you may notice versus the other side. You just seen. The tuition is actually less is over 2000 less and the fees are less and room and board typically are less as well and you'll find some schools that woman boys even below 10,000 and transportation is the same. You know, depending on where you were campus you go to that you attend is also going to depend how your travel is going to work.
And then here's a chart that has a breakdown of what the comparison of the sounis versus the other state, public colleges, and private colleges where you combine our tuition and fees. That alone let you know just how affordable we are versus out of state, public colleges, and private colleges, and then you add on their woman board. We're still going to be less versus the other institutions where I state public college. You're probably talking about 50,000 plus private colleges. You know, 60,000 plus.
Financial aid is available an approximately 75% of students enrolled do receive financial aid. It is need based or opportunities for scholarships. Most campuses do often merit based scholarships and they rent anywhere from $100 up to a full tuition of full ride. And there's also scotches vary by campus.
So if you sell for answers, you may be accepted to certain schools that you might find out that one camp is my offer. Full ride, but another campus you guys stepped into May not offer it, so you just need to make sure you do your research and find out all the scholarships are offered at each campus you're accepted to. Then there's the Excelsior Scholarship which helps provide students the opportunity to fill in the gaps where you may not receive enough financial aid to pay the tuition. So let's say for instance, you receive your financial aid package once you accept it, but you may not have received the full.
Perform at the maximum amount for your TAP grant, which is New York State or your Pell Grant, which is for the federal government. So when it comes to paying your tuition, you know those grants can help you out, but you might see. Like I said, you may not have received. You know, the maximum amount for one or both and maybe received one but not received the other. That's where Excelsior comes in to help. Now the thing about the Excelsior Scholarship to qualify your annual household income can be more than 125 thousand. You also will need to have checked off from the financial aid package received from the schools you were accepted too.
You need to check off that you were accepting everything because Excel she's going to take a look at that and then also.
Depending on the amount of years you receive, the scholarship is the amount of years you have to stay within New York State after you graduate. So if you receive the scholarship for three years, then that means after you graduate, you have to stay within New York State for three years and work, obviously with the New York State. However, if you leave New York State prior to the three years that Excelsior Scholarship is going to convert over into alone, which you will have to pay back.
And then my cancer. Completing your application for admission. One of the things that's very important is that application review when it comes to looking at transcripts now because of the circumstances of what has happened this year because of the pandemic and its effect on, you know, taking test when you understand that Regents exams.
You know, kind of be taken in this past spring and also can be taking the fall right now. But soon he has also gone test optional as well, so you'll see that those requirements are not going to affect you when it comes to looking at your transcript. They're not going to be looking at the regions exams or the essay Tees, but they are going to take a look at your overall GPA thing. I'll take a look at the number of academic units they're going to make sure that as a senior, you have at least met the minimum requires that as a senior, you took three years of math and passed. It took three years of social studies and pastor. Here's a science and pass.
He has more foreign language in past and now as a senior you're taking a senior level English Course and maybe possibly an English level honest course or college bound courts.
So as I had just mentioned, so soon he has gone test optional for the 2021 to 2022 academic year and so this applies to the spring of 2021. For 2021 is spring 2022 terms now the essay. So the SMT AC T test option requirement applies to nearly all Bachelor degree programs known as I said, nearly all and not all because there are certain campuses that may still require the essay T or AC T test scores as part of requirements have been admitted to a certain program.
Now wonder questions you're going to be asked on the application. Do you wish to have your standardized test scores considered as part of the admissions process?
So here's some things to consider. That's going to help you answer that question. Remember, I just mentioned that test scores may be required for admissions, or some programs. Test scores may be required for merit based scholarship now soon as a whole has adopted the test optional policy for merit based scholarships, however.
Certain scotches may require a test score. If you're an international student prior to your senior year you went to highschool overseas, and you're starting your first year here in the US at a high school. As a singer, you may be required to take the essay to the ACC to demonstrate English proficiency.
If you think it's cause an accurate representation of the ability, you may wish to answer yes. If you believe your test scores do not represent your abilities, feel free to answer no. We understand that there are students who Excel in the classroom, but maybe sometimes when it comes to test they may not be the greatest test taker, but they're excellent when it comes to their content.
Right now, if you aren't sure what to do, we highly recommend you speak to your school counselor or college advisor.
Now, let's say you submit it no, right? You submit it. You checked off no, but some point during the spring you took the essay to a senior at this amazing score. Now you want to submit it to be part of your process. The application process at that point, because you're very similar to application you.
We need to reach out to the admissions office at the campuses you applied to and inform them that you want to submit your essay to AC AC T scores to be considered as part of the part of the process to be reviewed.
And then once you complete everything, you're waiting for your decisions and then wait for the acceptance letters and then you can start figuring out next which schools you want to, what schools you want to do more explorations about, and then figure out and make that final decision which we wanted. The roads in rolling.
And then you had by Mail for us to declare your intention and roll. This applied to this applies to schools that offers rolling admissions, which means they continually send.
Tours are offered rolling out missions. They continue to accept students throughout the spring and summer and also they will. They will send acceptance letters throughout the spring, even the summer as well, but you'll have to declare by May 1st your intent to roll and then once you do that, that's what you also have to pay your tuition deposit your tuition deposit.
So what's next? So as you continue your search.
You wanna take a you wanna go to sony.edu backslash 10 which is going to help you start your search.
So let's say you must start the search for sounis by looking at campuses. So you click on campuses.
You click search for campus and now you can be taken to a page that's going to give you the options and narrow down your selections so you have location you have academic interest. You have sports locations broken down to three or five areas. As you can see here, Northern western, central, eastern and southern.
Adenta academic interest. So now when it comes to academic interest or academic programs, we have progress from A-Z, but we also have undecided as well. In the event that you're not sure what you want to do right now.
And then also for sports you can select the sport as well if you don't have a preference, that's fine. If you have a preference, you can select your sport and then you're going to click search and then when you click search is going to take you to this screen.
And it's not show you all the schools that meet those requirements. So as you can see there certain schools that match all three and certain schools that match two out of the three. So let's say you take a look at the student says, oh, you know what? Let me take a look at the University of Buffalo because it's a school that I was looking at. It's a school that's in the Eastern Territory that's locate now selected. They offer biological studies and they offer women's basketball. So whenever you click on any school, you're going to take it to a profile page that looks like this. It gives you a lot of fast facts.
Quick facts Now that own number of undergraduate students own number of graduate student, the student to faculty ratio.
And then also there's a link where you can be able to tap into whether you want to take a virtual tour. You want to speak to someone in financial aid or go to admissions, or you just want the overall site of the school. You have those options. They also show you the freshman profile and you also there also will tell you the name of the mascot as well.
Also, you can go soon, die in you backslash at 10. Not for just campuses. But you can also look for majors. So you take a look at the majors, go to undergraduate programs and then you'll be taken to this page. That's going to give you 3 different ways to be able to do your search. The top one and find the majors.
You can use the keyword, so let's say this person types in history and click search and then after they type history and then do this search they get a list of all these schools and so this person is going to take a look at adolescent education. Say oh, you know what I do want to be a social studies teacher, that's why I'm looking for. So when they click on that plus button is going to give you a pull down list of schools that offer that program. As you can see as such as soon equal in Fredonia offers a degree program, Bachelor degree programs, and adolescence education for history.
You can also utilize the pull down menu if you want to select the campus to do your exploration that way and see what great programs are offered at a specific campus. And you can also click search.
The next is programs, so remember I showed you before where you could do undergraduate programs. You can also do the search for study abroad programs, so here you click on study abroad. Programs will be taken to this wonderful page. That's going. Let's set you up to start your search right so you click the start now button and then it's gonna actually different questions of where you want to explore, where to study, what, which term program type. So let's still let's do example. So a student did the exploration and did this search.
And they want to find a study abroad program in Australia. As a result, they see that there's 30 two different programs that are offered in Australia consuming and they see here that Plattsburgh has a partnership with the University of Queensland and also University of Buffalo or Monash University. So it's doing it here is able to find programs the University at Buffalo, whether they had Buffalo at another suni, or you know at Plattsburgh then applied to either program because I told you earlier. As long as students within the Sunni system they can apply just at any study abroad program.
And then also had to search for athletics. So when you click on the search for athletics is going to give you different options. Here you can narrow down your choices by Campus, Sport, League, division, gender.
So as you do selections, a student can actually.
Once they do their selections, they click search and when they click search then we'll get this result. So for example, this student use the pull down menu to select the incident in ice hockey and when they did this search they find out that this ice hockey that's offered at these particular campuses.
The next is paying for college. When you click on paying for college, you're gonna be taken to the screen or this page known as smart Track. Now Smart Track is going to help you to start doing research about financial aid, 'cause I know that's a very big question that happens that we receive a lot by with students when it comes to financial aid and scholarships. So when you click on types of financial aid, there's different options. And as you can see here, scholarships, grants, loans, tax credits and you probably want to click scholarships and start doing research there. And when you click on that page, it's going to take is going to show you all the list of the campuses.
And you just click on that school. It's going to take you directly to that schools scholarship page.
And I hear this way go to apply. So when you click on apply is going to take it to the application portal where you will set up your account and then be able to go ahead and start creating. Start doing your search and creating your password and put in your email so you could have access and begin your application and once you've completed everything you have found just sooner you have found your match and we hope that you know once you find your soony you're going to want to roll in one of our campuses in the full.
