Hi everyone, my name is candy Gibault Ann I'm director of admissions and enrollment. Thank you for joining us for Alfred states. Virtual overview. I look forward to sharing information about Alfred state to assist you with the college search, but first I'd like to share a brief video to get things started.

Welcome Everyone!
Hopefully, that gave you a little taste of some of the activities that are taking place on our campus that you can get involved in when you become a pioneer throughout the presentation. If you have any questions at all. I encourage you to put them in the chat. My colleague Brooke Smith is on with me tonight and will be sure to answer those for you as we go through the presentation.
So Alfred State is located in Alfred, New York, which is 2 hours West of Binghamton, 2 hours South of Buffalo, an hour South of Rochester, NY were part of the suni system or the State University of New York, which is made up of 64 campuses. Has Soony is the largest public comprehensive system of higher education in the nation. It's made up of four different types of sectors from University centers to community colleges, and Alfred State is one of seven technology colleges.
We're the only one in Western New York and we offer cutting edge programs in some technology oriented fields as well as some traditional disciplines. I think what makes us unique is that our focus is on filling a need for skilled employees along with teaching other important skills such as leadership, communication and the ability to work as part of a team so that our students are ready to hit the ground running.
Our student body just to give you a sense, we have about 3700 students that it's hand Alfred state from 29 different States and five foreign countries. The male to female breakdown is 3 to two. We have small class sizes so you're going to have access to your professors. In fact, your professors for the most part are going to know you by name and we like to refer to this as technology with a personal touch.
We actually have two campuses. The picture that you're seeing here is our Alfred campus and this is where we house our School of Architecture, Management and engineering technology. Our School of Arts and Sciences and all of our residence halls are located on this campus along with athletic in our fitness facilities. About 15 miles from the Alfred campuses are wellsville campus.
This is our school of applied technology. We do provide bus transportation throughout the year for students but students are certainly welcome to drive themselves about 25% of our students attend class in Wellsville. There's dining services here student activities and support services are available on both campuses in a couple minutes. I'm going to talk about the difference in the types of programs that are offered on the two campuses. You see the Wellsville campus here is very much large buildings and it's because of the types of.
Of programs that at houses.

What major is everyone interested in studying?
We have over 80 different majors that we offer, so there's a little something for everyone and it's broken down into 29 bachelors or four year degree programs, 49 associates degree or two year degree programs, and we have a couple of certificate programs. We also have many of our programs that we offer on line, but again, what makes us unique is that our programs have a ladder approach, so a student can easily move from an associate step into a bachelor's step, basically earning both of those degrees within four years.
So that's something that we like to encourage students to do.
I'm going to start with the first school of study being our school of Arts and Sciences.

Cyber security or sports management
This is where you're going to find programs like our forensic science technology. This program has so much science in it that it really is like a four year biology or chemistry degree. We're very fortunate that Drug Enforcement Agency out of New York City has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment that our students get to work on its equipment that they're using in the field. So they are equipped to go out and work rate after graduation.

cyber security
We also have a criminal justice program where we have a dedicated crime scene lab right on the campus and I always tell students if you were the student that wants to be at the crime scene collecting the evidence. That's the criminal justice program. If you'd rather be back in the lab doing the analytical testing, the DNA toxicology, the arson screening, that's the forensic science program.

Our criminal justice program. We actually host the Police Academy on campus so students can apply to that and if they are accepted into the Police Academy, they can use some of that's credit towards their criminal justice degree.
In this school, you're going to see our four year agriculture program. AG entrepreneurship. Alford was recognized as a dairy of distinction. We also have a veterinary technology degree in bestcolleges.org ranked US #3 in US colleges with that animal in health technology programs.
Another program you can see on the screen as nursing this one is near and dear to my heart. My daughter recently graduated from Alfred's nursing program in the way that our program is structured again that latter approach. We have what's called a dual degree so the student can earn both their associates and their bachelors degree in Brook certainly had no problem getting a job after graduation. And she's currently working as a travel nurse in Charlotte, NC so all sorts of opportunities coming out. Other medical related programs that we have in the school or radiological technology.
Also known as X Ray technician in our diagnostic medical sonography or the ultrasound program and for students that maybe aren't sure what they want to do, we offer an undeclared major where we can do some career exploration and what better place to do that? We have over 80 different majors available, so you can kind of get a taste of everything and if you do want to just get started and get some general courses out of the way we have liberal arts degrees. Those are your first two years of a four year degree in their University parallel programs that are designed for transfers so we can help you if your.
You know perhaps interested in coming to Alfred in. You want to get a psychology degree or something like that. You might want to start in our liberal arts social science, so I encourage you to talk with admissions counselors in your school counselor and we can help guide you along the way.
Our next School of study in this one has a few slides because there's a lot of programs that fall within. It is our school of Architecture, Management and engineering technology. This school is where you're going to find our five year naab accredited Bachelor of architecture which leads to professional licensure where the only Sunita offer this degree. We have court in real time reporting where students learn to type up to 200 and worked sorry 225 words per minute. It's a specialty language and they use this stenography machine.
And they do close captioning. We have some graduates who sit at home in their pajamas and watch live television and their typing on their stenography machines as they're watching the TV captioning the show. And it's going from their computer across the satellite in space. And then across your television screen. So really, cutting edge technology that's involved with that program. Lots of computer options. You're going to see some here on this slide and then some as I continue on with the presentation, but we have a really general computer information systems program that feeds into.
Some upper division areas in the information technology fields. We have cyber security.
On the business side of things, we have a financial planning where students can sit to become a certified financial planner and go to work either as personal financial planners or corporate financial planners. On the artistic side, you're going to see digital media and animation listed. In addition, we also have a graphic and media design program and a game and interactive design.
Brook Smith @ Alfred
07:12:21 PM
Great! We have them all!
We have several engineering technology programs, you'll see mechanical engineering. Tac electrical surveying construction. So quite a variety and then in the business side. A couple other programs. They just wanted to mention our sport management program where students have the opportunity to do great things one of our recent graduates had an internship with the Baltimore Orioles, which turned into a great opportunity for him and then technology management. You're going to see me here about their hear me.
Talk about this in a little bit where you can apply it on particularly with our associate in Occupational Studies. Degrees that are taught on our school of Applied Technology. But really, any program that Alfred offers you can take your two year degree an it feeds right into tech management. If you want to combine that skill set with a business degree in, it's nice because you can take those courses right on campus or they are also offered on line and you will take 3 semesters of business courses in the final semester would be an internship.
That you would then use to go right out into the workforce. So lots of things happening there.
The Final School of study is our school of applied technology that I wanted to talk about in. This is the Wellsville campus that I showed you previously. Students live on the Alfred campus, but they spend about a third of their day in lecture on the Wellsville Campus and the other 2/3 rate in the lab. They're not taking specific general education courses for the most part. There are a couple of programs that do require a separate math class, but mainly they're learning about it and then applying it in the math and the.
English that they're doing is embedded into the program. Again, these are called associate in Occupational Studies. There really designed to be career based programs, but they also give the students the flexibility to go right out into the workforce or continue on in Tech management or our construction supervision program with some of our construction related.
You'll see programs like our building construction, where our students will construct.
Income homes from the ground up integrating sustainable construction. The construction and maintenance electrician is a really popular program where students graduate and go into either residential or commercial wiring. We have a culinary arts Anna Baking Program. They have operator restaurant right on the campus during the day called the refinery.
We have a pretty extensive automotive program that includes our motorcycle and power sports technology along with auto body, truck and diesel in the motor sports. Again, these are all two year degrees in some students will crossover and and perhaps get 1 degree and then decide they want to specialize and stay for a second degree.
On the applied technology campus we have an advanced manufacturing center that is home to our welding and machine tool. Students were there learning sustainable practices, prototyping and development of new products and systems, so all sorts of things for our students in the hands on that they get to prepare him for. The workforce is just wonderful. I want to share this slide which are some of our off campus facilities in when you look up in the top left.
That's a picture of one of the Barnes on campus. It's our Center for organic and sustainable agriculture. We have an 800 acre college farm which is basically a farm to lab that provides practical instruction in production agriculture to route to feed for some of our colleges livestock. It's also home to dairy, beef, horses, swine, poultry, sheep, even some meat goats. The facility that you see that has just the Lake lodge sign as a recreational facility that students can kind of get away.
Jeremy
07:15:54 PM
Mechnucal engineering technology
And um, relax and it's off campus at the top right. You're going to see an interior shot of our veterinary Technology Center and then the bottom lower, right? That's our net zero energy home. It's a 2200 square foot home that was designed to be highly energy efficient and incorporates a variety of renewable energy technologies such as solar photovoltaic, small wind, Thermo, and geothermal. Also has a high end monitoring system in it.
The facility was built by a group of our building trades students and it's now used as a demonstration home and when students come to visit, were able to take them through so they can see some of the craftsmanship that all of our programs were involved in helping in. Kind of make that facility or reality, the lower left hand side is an interior shot of the motorcycle, an power sports technology major.
So project based learning, I'm hopefully you're getting a sense that we're a leader and we have a long history in project based in applied learning. Our students are going to take theory and then they're going to learn by doing in a skilled based environment, and they do this through on and off campus experience. Many of them are involved in labs practicums we have clinicals the students are involved in clubs and competitions and in fact 50% of our majors offer internships or some type of a practicum.
And many of our graduates are hired as a result of that experience that they had after graduation.
Our faculty are involved. They are teachers and not researchers, so they are available to students after class. They help with tutoring labs. Again, they're going to know your name. Many of them are award winning and they keep current through their employment and advisory boards. Many will work in their field of study in the summer and bring that knowledge back to the campus, so hopefully you're finding you know that there's going to be a lot of support and a lot of knowledge. And I always tell students. Connect with your faculty.
Because they're going to be the ones that can help you when it comes time to get that job. They have some of those connections for you.
And Alfred State is more than just classes were going to be your home away from home, so we want to make sure we're going to be a good personal fit for you. Our residence halls include Tower Suite Corridor and we even have townhouses available. We're continually updating all of our residence halls. We use student input from our interior design major and they'll go into some of the lounge areas and redesign them to stuff that the student has indicated that they are interested in several lifestyle options available from a quiet study.
We have pet friendly over 21 bachelors housing and even freshman housing and then within some of the residence halls there's designated, living, learning, communities, architecture, nursing. We have a creative house designed for the digital media and animation and graphic median design housing for our proud group and for our summer prep. Along with some others. And they're all listed on our website under our residential services. If you want more information on any of that.
We also are part of the NCAA and we're Division Three for our athletic teams. We have 17 different athletic teams available to students in addition to some club sports. We have ice hockey, her woodsman's Club, archery, cheerleading, equestrian in an E sports team, and there are four fitness centers on campus for students to stay fit. So lots to do.
You did, see the video earlier, which did showcase some of the activities that are taking place. But we have a whole building that's just dedicated to student leadership and civic engagement. We want to make sure that our students are involved, and civically engaged we offer over 100 different clubs and organizations.
And what we also do is have students who volunteer over 70,000 community service hours each year.
If you're interested in things like our performing arts, we encourage you to bring an instrument. We want to get too involved. If you have talents like singing and acting will get you involved in our drama club. We just really encourage our students to try something new and kind of reach beyond their comfort zone. And it's a great opportunity for them to meet people.
Our dining facilities. Our students have a lot of choices on campus. They can use their meal cards everywhere. We have the main dining Hall which is called the terrace where you can get a little bit of everything. It offers healthy low fat options. Vegan vegetarian, also a variety of eateries on campus such as Taco Bell or Fresh Market Cafe Evergreen. That's in the middle of that student leadership center that I was talking about and they feature baked goods from our culinary arts program.
And it's really a great place to stop for lunch if you're looking for something quick to kind of grab and go. We have alfies timberlines, which is in the middle of our largest residence Hall complex, our mackenzie complex. And we even have a food truck called the feast beast that they bring out on special events.
For students that attend the Wellsville campus, their meals are prepared by the culinary arts students, so they really have, you know, fantastic opportunity over there and we have what's called CSA, a campus spending account that students have as part of their meal plan, and they can use that downtown in some of the locations. In some of the restaurants that participate on campus.
And kind of Speaking of our downtown area are Alfred community is small. We are a college town where we typically have more students year round. Then we have residents. If you come to Alfred, there's going to be one stoplight, an actually 3 colleges Alfred state, where the largest of the three and then across the street from us as Alfred University. That's a private University and they also. How's the school of Arts and Sciences?
Kody
07:22:21 PM
Can the meal plan be used in the town off-campus?
Alfred, how did we get our name? We were named after King Alfred the great in the 1800s, settlers from Winchester, England noticed the resemblance with all of the Terra cotta roofs in the clayground, so we've kind of adopted the name Alfred from there, so there's again lots of opportunities. Academically, students can cross register and take up to two classes a semester. On Alford, use campus and they can do the same on ours socially with your student ID you can.
And some of their events, so it's like having two sets of colleges with activities everything within the same town.
Let's kind of transition and talk a little bit about cost. I know this is an important part of making your college decision, and if you're looking for a high quality academic programs at an affordable cost, I want you to know that Alfred State is a great value. US news and World Report ranked US as number one public colleges among northern regional colleges for best valued schools in Money Magazine ranked Alfred State is the number one soony for lowest average student debt. If you take a look at the screen, our annual tuition is 7070 with a total price just.
Brook Smith @ Alfred
07:23:31 PM
The meal plan can be used at any facility on campus, but not off. However, students can put funds on their campus spending account and use at several area businesses and eateries.
Under 22,000 per year and I don't want that to scare you because 92% of our students receive some type of financial aid and we have a really generous scholarship program. Last year we awarded over 4.7 million dollars to academically talented students and so we can work with you to make sure that it's an affordable option for you for out of state students, I just want to show this slide real quick. We do have. You can save tuition dollars by starting in an associates degree.
Program and then continuing in one of our corresponding Bachelor degree programs and admissions counselors will help you in deciding what's the best option for you to start in but we do when we do encourage you to reach out and take a look at all of that and we just again want you to know that it's affordable, and you're going to be assigned to financial aid counselor so that they can go through the whole process and help assist you.
If you are interested in applying to Alfred state applications opened up August 1st and you can use either the sooney or the common application.
We are rolling admissions, So what that means is when we receive an application will review it and then we'll start to send out decisions sometime in mid to late October. So anybody who's applied, you know, hopefully in the next couple of weeks or so you'll be hearing, but you've applied directly to a major and some of our programs. You need to know that the requirements will vary by Major and you can go on Alfred's website Underofferedstate.edu on the academic page and it will show you.
The entrance requirements you can click on the specific major. The other thing that's really neat on that website under those academic majors is it will also show you a semester by semester outline. So if you want to take a look at a major and see what's involved in case you're maybe deciding between a couple of different programs you can click on the course descriptions and that might help guide you a little bit.
But again, you're going to apply directly to that major we're going to require that you send your high school transcript and then if you've completed any college courses. We'd like to get your official college transcript as well.
And if you're applying through the Suni application, we do require the Suni Supplemental. We really want your senior courses, and then an essay is part of that. Alfred state is going to be test optional for fall 21. However, we do encourage students. If you have the opportunity to go ahead and try and take those essay Tees, and.
ECT's if you can't take him, that's not going to be held against you, but we do encourage students if they can to go ahead and try and take him for my juniors who might be listening. We're not sure yet what will be happening for fall 22, so I really do encourage that you take those tests as well. Again, you can send us letters of recommendation if you have any work experience that's going to be considered, so please provide that.
And then if you're applying to some of our programs, like our architecture program, we do require a portfolio for our Bachelor of architecture are radiological technology and diagnostic medical sonography. Programs require either a four hour shadowing experience or an interview with the Department chair and she's really great about doing those virtually to save students from having to come to campus.
Our heavy equipment operations program requires 2 letters of recommendation, an essay, and a resume. Again on that website. Under those academics, you can see what all of the requirements are to kind of help you out a little bit.
So offered state has a reputation as an institution of excellence for applied learning and Technology, but more importantly, we have the results to prove it. This slide shows that we have a 98% employment in continuing education rate. We survey our graduates six months after graduation. In these are the results that we've determined of that 73% of our graduates are employed in 25% continued their education. I think this statistic that I'm the most proud of.
That is, of the 73% more employed. 95% of them are employed in their field of study. That means that they are getting jobs for what they went to school for.
We would love to show you more an have you connect with our faculty and there's a lot of opportunities to do that. We have 3 virtual open house programs coming up. You can see the dates listed on the screen there.
It's an opportunity again for you to speak with academic faculty engaged with some of our students. We even offer a virtual campus tour. We are doing weekly visits as well. If you go to Alfred state's website alfredstate.edu/visits, you'll see everything that we're offering, but we are currently offering limited on campus tours where students can come in person and meet with an admissions counselor and get a tour of the college. It's mainly an exterior tour of the campus.
We do go into a couple of buildings, so we'd love to have you visit. They do tend to fill pretty quickly, so I encourage you to check out our website.
And at this time I would love to answer any questions that you might have. Brooke. Is there anything that was put in the chat that I can answer for students?
Just give her a second to take a look.
Yes, candy pessary questions here. First question.
I've taken a lot of college level coursework during high school. I'm just the students wondering if it's going to transfer.
Great question. So what we would do first is we would ask you to send us a copy of your college transcript and official copy of the college transcript and have that sent to Alfred. And then we'll have.
Transfer counselor evaluate that. For the most part. If it's a general course in you earned AC or better, it will more than likely transfer into Alfred state and we also have a guide raid on our website. If you go to alfredstate.edu under transfer students, their transfer equivalency guide where you can look up the college where you took the course in Italy equate it for you. How it would come into Alfred states program. So yeah, more than likely if it's one of the courses you took in high school.
And it's a program where you need that course will be able to bring it in for you.
OK, the next student is wondering how they would share the related work experience with us.
So you can do that in a couple of different ways through an essay if you'd like to write about a job that you've had also a resume if you want to share any types of employment history that you've had, and then just make sure you put descriptions within your resume, you can do a student activity sheet. Whatever works best for you, but in to get it to the college. You certainly can email it to admissions at Alfred State.
Alex
07:30:32 PM
How would I share my related work experience with you?
Edu or you can upload it as part of your application.
Thank you very much. Let's see what else you got here. We've got tons of questions.
Are students able to double major?
Airyanna
07:30:54 PM
Are we able to double major?
So we have a couple of opportunities, where a student can get minors, but not necessarily to majors at the same time, if you were going to do a major you would graduate from one program and then apply for the other.
Well, this is a great one. What is our diversity at Alfred State?
Kody
07:31:16 PM
What’s the diversity there?
Yeah, so we're a fairly diverse campus. I think I mentioned that we have 3700 students that come from, you know, 29 different states, 5 foreign, different foreign countries. We have all ethnicities were diverse and the types of activities that are offered, whether we're bringing in rural students or for bringing inner city students. So it's a great place to be in a lot of students. In fact, some of our employees, even I can speak with in the admissions office.
Decide to stay and work for the college afterwards because they don't want to leave.
Alex
07:31:57 PM
Is there a cap on the number of students accepted into your Game Design Program?
Is there a cap on the number of students that you accept into certain majors?
Another fantastic question. Yes, in some majors we actually encourage students to apply early because they have limited space, particularly on the school of applied technology. The construction and maintenance electrician program has limited seats available, and it tends to fill pretty quickly. Our nursing program has limited space. The Red Tech and the diagnostic medical ultrasound program that we offer. Those also have limited.
So for a major like digital media and animation or one of the engineering programs, is it common for them to go on a waiting list?
Now those programs typically have enough space that they're available, so.
Kody
07:32:53 PM
What Covid procedures have been put in place?
What covid procedures has the institution put into place?
So all sorts of things are taking place on campus right now. Our goal is to make sure that everybody is safe, as you know or were masked up. If we're in within 6 feet of an individual, you definitely have to have that mask on an inside any of the buildings masks on at all times within our classroom. Some of our classes have gone virtual.
In some of them, their meeting you know less than 55 minutes so that they make sure we're not in class on their students aren't in class for an extended period of time, and then even within the residence halls, you know there's some.
Things that have taken place there to make sure that students aren't congregating in large groups are dining halls are mainly take out. We have a mobile app that we've instituted so students can actually order their food ahead of time and get it to go so that they're not having to stand in long lines. And it's not large gatherings, so, and I'd encourage you on our website. We actually have a really great video about the safety precautions that have taken place on campus.
OK, so we had a question about our safety statistics. It just says what are the safety statistics? I'm just wondering from the person who asked that if we're speaking specifically regarding kovid or campus safety, so we're waiting for more detail on that question. How far are we from New York City?
Kody
07:34:26 PM
How far are you from NYC?
Kody
07:34:32 PM
What are the safety stats?
So from New York City we are about four and a half to five hour drive. We're two hours West of Binghamton, NY. If that kind of gives you a sense.
OK, great, thank you candy and it looks like that question was regarding campus safety. So where would a student go to find our campus safety statistics?
Kody
07:34:50 PM
Campus safety
Yes, so those are also located on the student page on the campus on the website. They can go there, and if they actually go to the search bar and I think put in the campus security and Assurance Act, it should pull it right up for them.
OK, can a freshman have a car in campus?
Yes, freshman can have a car on campus. Alford is not a large campus, but I always joke that the parking lot for freshman is at his freshman parking. You don't get the most convenient parking, so they're usually at the far end of campus for parking in really. With Alfred, you don't need your car. You're going to bring it, and you're going to park it and you won't need it unless you're going to go home at the end of the semester.
Great on what kind of special events happen on campus.
Airyanna
07:35:44 PM
Are there any special events that happen on campus?
So currently right now with covid they have altered the types of events that they're offering. They're doing some unique things like a drive in movie where they have it up on the football field where students can be spaced safely apart from each other, have their masks on, and they do movie night and that type of thing. But during the non covid times, hopefully if you didn't get a chance to see the video, I know they're recording this session, so you'll be able to go back or join our website.
On our website, you'll be able to look at some of our videos if you go out to our visit page, but they have over 100 different clubs and organizations, and there's always something going on.
OK, next set of questions that we have is particularly related to entrance requirements. Can be we've got several. The first is asking the different GPA comparing GPA for an Associates Degree versus Bachelors degree that we need for entrance.
Kody
07:36:53 PM
What are the gpa requirements for the AAS PROGRAMS VS. THE BS programs?
Sure, so every program does have different course entrance requirements. If you're looking at like an engineering technology program, you know we're going to pay close attention to your math. Typically the algebra, geometry and algebra 2. Those three years, pre calc and physics are recommended if you're applying to one of our four year programs in you're looking at something like the engineering technology we typically look for bout in 8485 average.
For the four year program for our two year programs roughly we start with about a 75276 average for consideration and then for some of our business programs. There's also programs where the bachelors, we might start just a little bit lower about an 83 high school average and again. The two year programs right around the 76 I would say there's there's no cookie cutter mold. It really we look individually at every application and we're paying attention to what your grades were an.
Some of those key courses along with what your grade point averages essay Tees, enacts again, not required for entering you. Certainly when you apply to a four year program, you have the option to ask or to say that you want to have them included in the review process. But you also have the option to have those excluded, and when we review we will go through the application. And if for some reason a students just missing one entrance requirement will work with that student.
Either to conditionally accept him to get it out of the way their senior year if they are able to do so or Alfred. It's really great about offering some non credit courses to help advance the students skills in the summer time. Prior to coming so we make sure that you're ready to get started and kind of hit the ground running.
And then I think our last question just has to do with us 80s. So do you need us 80s to receive a scholarship?
So the answer to that is no, we do not require the essay T for a student to receive a scholarship for students entering fall 21. So for my seniors who are out there, juniors that we have not made that determination at this point. So I do encourage all students if they can to try and take the essay TRACT, but it will not for this year seniors, it's not going to be held against you.
And I think right now our chat, Sarah quieted down here and I think we've answered everybody's questions.
Great, well thank you so much and again if we can be of any assistance at all, please don't hesitate to give us a call 1-800-425-3733 option one for admissions and you can always email us.admissions@alfredstate.edu and we thank you for your time and good luck in your college search process. Everyone have a great night.
