Full screen viewing can be enabled by clicking the expand button at the top right corner of the shared window and should you need to re sync your audio and or video, please refresh your shared window.
And then if you have any questions throughout this presentation, be sure to put them in the chat box.
So again, my name is Denise Greenwich and I'm the missions recruitment advisor at the Sooney Welcome Sensor at the Sony Welcome Sensor. We strive to give our students information about 64 campuses along with ways on how to navigate the application process. So again today I'll be giving the how to apply session an. Let's start. So before you begin applying some things to know our, please please, please make sure you're starting to prepare. So start to select some campuses that you may be interested in.
And even some academic majors that you may want to study.
You can also use our application worksheets to start drafting your answers before doing the official application.
Start writing your essay early in having someone proofread it. Please make sure you have someone proofread it to make sure you are sending in the best possible version to campus reps and then start to consider who you may want to ask for recommendation letters.
So soon E stands for the State University of New York an it is comprised of 64 campuses. We do have over 4300 plus majors. These majors do range from liberal arts, Health Sciences, engineering an more, so there's definitely a lot to choose from, but some students may not know what they want to study when they're going into college, and that is definitely OK. Many of our campuses do allow you to come in.
If you would like more information, you can use the website towards the bottom to attend, which soon are you presentation.
So again, I was referring to this a little bit earlier, but you can draft your answers using the application worksheet and the supplemental application worksheets. All questions with all questions on this worksheet are the same on the official application.
So now it's time to choose your actual application. You can use the Suni application or the common app. So 53 of 64 campuses actually accept the Suni application. In 65 of 64 campuses, actually accept the common application community colleges actually offer their own individual applications.
So if you haven't heard already soon, he has gone, says optional. So essay T an AC T testing requirements have been suspended for spring 2021, fall 2021 and spring 2022 terms in this applies to nearly all Bachelor degree programs. So when you're applying the question that you will see is do you wish to have your standardized test scores considered as part of the admissions process?
So some things to note are test scores and maybe required permissions to some programs. Many of these programs happens to be within the Health Sciences programs like nursing, but there isn't a specific list, so if you are interested, definitely contact the Office of Admissions to the campus at which you are applying. Test scores may also be required for merit scholarship consideration as well as international students may be required to demonstrate English proficiency.
So when you're answering this question, if you feel like your scores are an accurate presentation of your ability, feel free to answer yes. If you feel like your scores do not represent your abilities, feel free to answer now. And if you are unsure on how to answer this question, definitely consult with your school counselor or your school advisor. I want to make it known that if you decide not to submit SAT or AC T testing scores, you will not be negatively impact.
So once you submit your application online, you won't be able to go back online and change any questions answered specifically. So if you would like to change their answer to your test optional question, you will need to contact the Office of Admissions at the campus to which you have applied.
So now it's time to determine your admissions plan so we do have rolling admissions, early decision as well as early action.
So with rolling admission, many students tend to apply with this. Applications are reviewed as received until that specific program is full and accept this. Letters are sent out continually. They recommend the recommended completion date on this slide. Does say before December 31st. I personally would advise you to try to get your application in by December 1st. That way you have optimal consideration for housing as well as scholarships. And again if you are admitted through emissions, your tuition deposit will be Dubai.
So next we have early decision. An early decision is for students who know of 1 specific college that they really, really want to attend. So within Sony is available at ESF, which stands for the College of Environmental Science and Forestry Genesio Maritime, the New York State colleges at Cornell. So again, this can be only used at one specific college choice and it is a binding program if admitted through early decision. You must withdraw all other cause application.
An your tuition deposit will be due by January 15th. The set deadlines are coming up with in November.
With early action, this is unlike early decision, so you can use this for multiple colleges as soon as it is available at Albany Binghamton University at Buffalo, the New York State College of Ceramics, Cortland, New Paltz Old Westberry only on to Oswego Purchase and Suni Polytechnic. So again, this can be used at multiple colleges and it is a non binding program if admitted through early action. Your tuition deposit will be due by May 1st and again the set deadlines.
Are coming up with in November.
So next we have the GOP program which stands for the Educational Opportunity Program an this is a program for students who show promise to succeed in college despite being historically disadvantage. So with ELP program, they strive to provide academic as well as financial support for students. So one thing to know about the ELP program. If you are looking to apply to LP you will not be able to apply early decision an early action you would have to apply either LP or the other.
So I know sometimes a lot of students may be interested in your pee, but they may not want to do the program because they may not want to attend college before they start in August because they don't want to give up their summer. But it definitely is a great program, so I attended Suni Binghamton an ask any backups, and I was in ELP student. And while they're doing the program the summer before, I was able to work on my GPA, meet my future classmates, learn the campus as well as meeting my future IOP counselor as well.
And it definitely was a big help for me, so some of the eligibility requirements are you must be a New York State resident for 12 months prior to enrollment. You must qualify academically and financially, so each campus does have their own GPA requirements for their ELP program. And again, priority is given to students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.
So now talk a little bit about the six steps to apply. So the first step didn't create an account. The second step is to answer questions. So the first start of the questions take about 15 minutes to answer.
The 3rd third step is to choose campuses that you're interested in as well as the majors to go along with it.
The fourth step is to pay the application fee.
The 5th step is to submit supplemental applications.
And the six step is to send and supporting documents. So things like guys say your recommend your recommendations as well as your transcript.
So now I'll go through a little bit of the application. Are you ready?
So you'll go on sony.edu backslash ten annual click on the apply button. An here you'll see creature applies to any account now, so once you click on this, you'll fill in your name. Your date of birth, and the important thing to know is the email. Please make sure you are using a professional email. Maybe something like your first and last name. Your first initial last name. Just make sure that this email is very professional because this is an email that campus reps will be looking at.
Once you have completed your registration, you will be asked to log in and once you do that, you'll be able to start your 2021 Sweeney application towards the bottom of this PowerPoint. You'll also see the worksheets that I was referring to a little bit earlier in this presentation.
So the first thing to note is the tabs at the top with the first question it says will you be a freshman or a transfer student, depending on how you first answer this question, the tabs will change a little bit, so freshmen won't have to answer questions that refer to transfer students and vice versa.
On the side you'll see in this section. So within each section you'll see how many sections that you have to do for that specific tab.
After going throughout the whole application, you'll even see some green checkmarks or a red minus sign. If you see the green checkmarks, that means you may have answered everything correctly and then if you see a red minus sign, that means you may have missed a question. So go back, proofread and make sure you've answered everything.
Now, if you need any help while applying, you can use the get help button at the top. You can talk to our live representatives through the live chat or you can see if your question has already been answered through the FA Q's.
So again, you can talk to a live representative through the live chat. Most of them answered within under 10 seconds.
So now it's time to answer the questions on the application. So again, the first question says will you be a freshman or a transfer student with the first question, many students in high school are taking college classes. They're taking AP courses in many times they think that they are transfer student because they are taking these college classes. But it is important to note that you are considered a freshman. You are only considered a transfer student after you have graduated from high school and then earn college credit.
So once you once you answer that question, you'll see this confirmation about whether you are a freshman or a transfer. So the next important thing is the are you applying for the ELP program? The way you answer this, you will either see the ELP wizard the LP wizard will ask you a series of questions.
To answer an, when you go through and answer these questions you will see what your initial eligibility requirements are, so you may be eligible for GOP or you may not.
Now, once you complete the tab, definitely make sure to save and continue. This just allows you to leave the computer for a little bit and come back and have your work St.
So now it's time to input personal information, so things like your first and last name. We also do ask for a Social Security number as well as date of birth and gender, but Social Security question is not a required question. It definitely just helps to put your financial aid application with your regular application faster. Again, you'll be asked for your date of birth and gender with gender. You can. Also. You're allowed to share a little bit more.
So now again, you'll save and continue an next. We have the address, so you can put in your permanent mailing address. Things where you get Mail that or if you have a temporary million address. As of now, you can also use that if you would like.
So with the next tab is talking about citizenship, so you will just have to answer these series of questions.
If you are an undocumented student, you will still need to provide provide a visa type with us towards the bottom. You will just have to click on other for Visa type.
Once you do that, you will save and continue annual be asked for residency. So now the important thing to know on this page is select your New York State County of residence. So many times students because they are living in New York. Sometimes if they're from Brooklyn, they may put down New York, but it is important to know if you are from any of the New York City boroughs. Definitely make sure to do a quick Google search, like for example Brooklyn is in New York. It's kingsboro, but again, it's definitely a quick Google search.
Make sure to save and continue an. Now we're on to demographics so you'll input if you have military or veteran status. If you are Hispanic or Latino, you'll also be asked to indicate your race or if English is your native language, these questions aren't required, but the one question that is required is, have you been dismissed, expelled, and or suspended from a college for disciplinary reasons? So the way you answer this, just answer truthfully please.
Next is to save and continue, and now we're on to household income, so household information, so you'll definitely input share family income range along with the size of household, an whom you make your permanent home with.
You'll also be asked to put in your high school name, so here you'll be asked for either the CEB code or the schools name city and state so it is important to note that sometimes the way you type in your high school name may not be the way we have it in our system, so I would definitely advise you to use high school city and state to find your high school within our system. If you are attending high school outside of the US, or you have been home school, you can use the options towards the bottom.
So again, once you do that, the high school list will pop up and you will choose the high school that you are attending now.
Saving continue and now we're on to standardized test scores. So again, essay T an AC T testing requirements have been suspended, but if you would like to put in your scores, you can provide the latest date that you took the SAT or AC T, or if you are still planning to take it, please include that date as well.
So now it's on to the fun part of choosing some campuses. So first you will choose a semester in which you would like to enroll, and then you would pick a campus. So let's say we wanted to go to school at University at Albany. Here you'll be asked if you would like to apply for the ELP program at their campus. And then you'll also pick a program that you would like to study.
Some things to know about the programs are please make sure you're viewing the notes by the side. Sometimes these notes do have requirements for that specific program. Also towards the right hand side you'll see the status of that specific program as well, so you'll see if it's open or if it's closed due to limited spots.
And here's the question I was referring to a little bit earlier in this presentation for SAT&ACT testing scores. Do you wish to have your standardized test scores considered as part of the admissions process?
So there you will answer that an here you will see what happens at the end. So let's say we were applying to University Albany. We chose we wanted to study accounting. We wanted to live on campus. We requested housing. We requested the OPI an we wanted to include our test scores. So once we do that you can also add more campus choices or you can save and continue.
So now that we have completed our application, you will finally either see some green checkmarks. This means we have successfully completed everything, but if you see some red minus sign again, definitely go back and proofread.
So now it's time to finalize your application. Make sure again to proofread, print out your application if you need to.
Now you will acknowledge that you comply with all program requirements.
And the last step is to pay. So again each application is $50 unless you're eligible for a fee waiver. If you're eligible for a fee waiver, you will be able to apply up to 7 campuses for free. So here, here are some of the eligibility requirements. Students whose household income is less than 185% of federal poverty level. Students who qualify financially for LP transfer students with an associates degree from a suni.
Or CUNY college military and military connected students.
Students can also apply for a fee waiver if they have been experiencing economic hardship as well. You will just need to fill out this request form and Mail it back in. So now it's time to submit your application before you press submit application. Please please please make sure you are proofreading through your application. Make sure all the answers are how you would want it to be.
Because once you click on some application, you won't be able to go back online and change your answers.
So once we submit our application, you will see that you will need to complete supplemental application as well as the ELP financial information form. If you aren't interested for ELP.
So now we're back to the portal. So at the top you can send your application to additional campus campuses. If you would make. If you may like, you can also continue to use the worksheets to draft your answers and then towards the bottom you will see the campuses that you have applied to an you will see if you need to submit a supplemental essay and the IOP financial information which is actually required for Albany here. And you will also need to submit a school counselor form and a fee waiver request form if you would like.
Now it's on to the supplemental application, so here's a little preview of the supplemental application. You will need to add your academic senior year courses and you will be asked to do the essay. So the essay is actually the only required question within this supplemental application. So again, here are some essay topics that you can choose to write from, but at the bottom you can also choose to share an essay of your own topic.
Now it's on to doing your ELP financial information form. So the first step is to complete the form. Second step is to upload or mailing documentation and the third step is to complete your PSA if required by that specific campus.
So here's the form you'll be asked to fill in some guy income guidelines. So here are some eligibility requirement questions as well. Are you and your family primarily dependent on public assistant payments from temporary assistance to needy families? Are you in the foster care as established by the courts? And are you a Ward of the court or County so?
Now here are some of the final steps. Please read your email colleges do send out campus portal links that have other requirements that are needed for you so you can see if there if they need anymore documentation needed to review your application.
And here are some things to remember. Reminder the Sooney application is now open again. You can use this only application or the common app to apply.
Please make sure you know that you can complete one application, so apply to almost any soony school.
Don't forget that the Sooney application is $50 per campus unless you are eligible for a fee waiver. Definitely start talking to your counselor. Let them know which campuses you have applied to so they can request your transcript.
Also continue checking your email again for campus portal links for anything that the campus may also need from you, and then continue to follow up with all the items within the next steps of the application portal.
So now I hope that we will see you on campus next fall and if you have any questions you can contact the recruitment response sensor so you can contact them using the one 800 number. Or you can contact them using their email. They are a great resource in terms of application process so I wish you guys the best of luck in appliances college Ann. Thank you for joining me with this.
